COP28 Expo City, Dubai (2023)

Vivacity Development organized a side event at the United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP28) on Monday, December 4, 2023, at Expo City, Dubai lasting for the duration of 2 hours. The event’s theme was Climate Change Awareness – Nigeria’s Action Plan, focusing on critical issues faced by the African continent, particularly youth and women in the context of climate change. 

Key Focus Areas:

– Human Health: Impacts of climate change on women and young people were examined.

– Adaptation and Resilience Strategy: Strategies for coping with climate change challenges were discussed.

– Individual Actions: Encouragement of personal actions to mitigate negative climate change effects.

Event Conveyance:

The event was led by Mrs. Kemi-Ann Areola, former Special Assistant on Youth, ICT, and Corporate Relations to the immediate past Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Nigeria.

– Dr. Mohammed Dahiru Amibu: Policy Manager for Africa, Methane Pollution Clean Air Task Force.

– Musa Ibrahim: Youth Champion, National Agency for the Great Green Wall.

– Adejoke Lasisi: Founder and Creative Director, Planet 3R.

– Eng. Kemi-Ann Melody Areola: CEO, Vivacity Trisector Development Specialist.

– Other speakers included Bayo Adams (Periscope Consulting Limited), Ahmed Salihijo Ahmad (MD/CEO, Rural Electrification Agency Nigeria), Babajide Sanwo-olu (Executive Governor, Lagos State), Fatima Aliyu Magaji (Youth Champion, National Agency for the Great Green Wall).

Panelists included Olumide Idowu (Executive Director, International Climate Change Development Initiative), Chinwe Oluwatoyin Adindu (Senior Scientific Officer/Climate Youth Negotiator), Titilayo Oshodi (Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Lagos State Governor), Ebem Nnenna (Renewable Energy Specialist).

Key Highlights:

– Triple Planetary Crisis: Eng. Kemi emphasized climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

– Climate Change Simplification: Dr. Mohammed discussed green skills, renewable energy (wind, solar), ecosystem restoration, and issues like sea-level rise, Lake Chad shrinking, ocean acidification, heatwaves.

– Actions Needed: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions, addressing deforestation, climate misinformation, unsustainable agriculture.

– Youth Role: Musa Ibrahim highlighted community-based and social media advocacy, valuing indigenous knowledge.

– Partnerships: The Kingdom of Northern Lands partnered with Vivacity Development.
